Are Mammograms The Key?
When women are trying to maintain breast health, paying attention to subtle changes matters. Understanding subtle changes can help women to be proactive. Statistics show that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, with over 300,000 new cases yearly. While routine annual screenings are vital, the body will sometimes send signals that require immediate medical evaluation between scheduled appointments. Women who notice the following 3 signs should not wait for an annual checkup and go straight for a diagnostic mammogram.
1. A new lump appears
A new or developing lump is the most well-known sign, but women should look at any new mass with care. Breast tissue naturally has a textured, lumpy feel, especially around a woman’s menstrual cycle. Look for a new, distinct lump or an area of thick, hard tissue that feels noticeably different from the rest of the tissue or the opposite breast. A lump may feel painless, hard, and have irregular edges. The lump may not go away after the menstrual cycle. Don’t panic if a lump forms but take action and get a mammogram.
2. Skin and texture changes
Sometimes, breast changes that warrant a mammogram do not happen beneath the surface. The skin covering the breasts can offer critical clues. For instance, skin can look more textured, similar to that of an orange, which is a significant warning sign. This dimpling of the skin happens when fluid buildup or big structural changes pull on the skin. The texture and feel also change with unexplained warmth, swelling, and a rash, leaving key clues. These signs should be evaluated as soon as possible.
3. Nipple changes or discharge
The nipple is the focal endpoint for the breast’s duct system. Changes in and around the nipple are highly informative. For instance, the nipple can suddenly turn inward, flatten, or point in a different direction than usual. This subtle change can indicate an underlying issue that is pulling the tissue backward. Along with an inversion or retraction of the nipple, some women notice sudden discharge. Clear or bloody fluid that leaks from the nipple without pressing or squeezing should be a warning sign. There can be an underlying issue or infection with no release point. Imaging can identify any underlying challenges, which help doctors recommend treatment.
Get your mammogram
A mammogram is an excellent test to understand if there are any underlying concerns with breast tissue. This is the best way to identify lumps, infections, and other potential challenges. Mammograms help doctors determine if a biopsy is needed for testing. If women notice changes like a sudden lump, changes in skin texture, or discharge, see a doctor immediately. The doctor will recommend the mammogram, even if the patient is young or has had a previous check. Women with these changes should not panic, as not all lumps or changes mean breast cancer. At the same time, early mammograms can intercept potential cancer. When in doubt, seek advice from a doctor or specialist.
